China Duty Free Group has launched its Summer Island campaign at cdf Sanya International Duty-Free Shopping Complex. The most visible feature is an outdoor water park, but the strategy also includes entertainment, visitor services, targeted promotions and improvements for international tourists.
- The park opened on 17 July in the outdoor area of Block C and covers more than 800 square metres.
- Programming includes slides, obstacles, games, shows and a zone developed with the Coca-Cola Polar Bear intellectual property.
- The commercial challenge is to prove whether the experience creates incremental visits, longer dwell and profitable purchases.
What is happening
The campaign combines retail, entertainment and services during the peak holiday season and the eighth CDF Hainan Duty-Free Shopping Festival. It targets families, graduating students, teachers and sports enthusiasts.
The water park, described as Hainan's first outdoor duty-free water attraction, includes large slides, obstacle courses, interactive games and cooling play areas. Daily programming adds water battles and challenges, while weekly events include clowns, bubble shows and water parades.
The experience extends beyond the park. The complex offers indoor children's attractions, a Hainan stamp-collection campaign and a Dream Island created with the Coca-Cola Polar Bear IP. A cycling station provides parking, drinking water, repair tools, first aid and lock rental.
For international visitors, cdf Sanya has expanded card acceptance, foreign exchange and multilingual wayfinding. These improvements connect leisure, accessibility and shopping in one proposition.
Why duty free is becoming a destination
Shopping alone may not justify the visit
When products are available online and prices can be compared, the complex needs another reason to attract consumers. Family leisure reduces reliance on a purely transactional visit and turns the retailer into an activity within the holiday.
The group already has a platform at scale
cdf Sanya brings together nearly 1,000 brands and has generated CNY186 billion in cumulative sales over 15 years of Sanya operations. The complex combines beauty, fashion, luxury, technology, food and culture.
Its recognition as a national 4A tourist attraction confirms that the operator presents itself as more than a retailer. The water park extends that evolution, but also raises operating demands.
Hainan is competing as a consumption destination
Sanya recorded a strong first quarter in 2026. Duty-free sales rose 28.2%, in-store traffic increased 20.7% and purchaser numbers grew 21.1%. Promotions, vouchers and events contributed. Any assessment of the park therefore needs to separate its effect from wider market momentum.
Attraction
Leisure, content, events and reasons to visit.
Visit
Families, groups, tourists and planned itineraries.
Dwell
Services, food, shade, activities and useful time.
Purchase
Conversion, basket, category mix and margin.
Return
Recall, recommendation, repeat visits and loyalty.
The park is a commercial asset only if it changes defined stages of the funnel.
What it means for tourism and travel retail
The case moves duty free closer to resorts, theme parks and lifestyle centres. The unit of analysis is no longer only the shop. It includes the full visit, the family group, the activities used and the sequence between leisure, food and purchase.
For brands, the environment creates new consumption occasions. Sun care, hydration, snacks, children's products, sport and summer fashion can activate around real needs. Beauty and luxury can use appointments, sampling and collection while other family members join activities.
Hotels and destinations can include the complex in packages and itineraries. A scheduled visit supports transport, timing and joint promotions. For the retailer, this creates planned demand, but acquisition cost can rise if the model depends too heavily on discounting.
The model also offers a lesson for airports and border stores. Commercial space can compete as an experience when safety, maintenance, capacity and data support the ambition.
Where the commercial opportunities appear
Manage the complete visit
Connect bookings, activity, food, promotions and purchase.
Activate contextual needs
Place hydration, snacks, sun care and family products near use.
Create services during leisure
Offer diagnosis, sampling, appointments and collection without requiring a long visit.
Build packages
Combine transport, activity, food and duty-free benefits.
Connect activity and transaction
Link booking, capacity, journey, promotion, stock and basket.
Sponsor useful moments
Integrate brands into experiences with visit and sales measurement.
Can your business prove how much sales value genuinely comes from the experience?
Risks and practical barriers
- Confusing footfall with value. The park may attract non-buyers or replace a visit that would already have happened.
- Attributing seasonal sales to leisure. Holidays, vouchers, discounting and weather may explain part of the result.
- Creating permanent cost from temporary demand. Safety, water, cleaning, maintenance and staffing require capacity.
- Diluting the premium proposition. Family programming must coexist with luxury, calm and service.
- Using data without clear consent. Bookings, families and journeys require privacy controls.
No park-specific results have been published for visits, dwell, conversion or sales. First-quarter metrics refer to the Sanya duty-free market, not this activation.
How Marksyte can help
Marksyte can turn an attractive experience into a measurable commercial model for retailers, brands, hotels and destinations.
Incremental visit measurement
Separate new visitors from customers who would already have come.
Dwell analysis
Connect activities, journeys, time and category entry.
Commercial attribution
Measure conversion, basket and margin before and after the experience.
Demand forecasting
Combine weather, holidays, hotels, events and bookings.
Assortment and promotion
Adapt categories and offers to families, sport and international tourism.
AI assistants
Flag congestion, spend deviations and activation opportunities.
AI can help adjust the experience in real time, but it needs a baseline and a clear definition of incrementality.
A practical 90-day agenda
- Define the funnel. Measure exposure, visit, activity, dwell, purchase and return.
- Create comparable groups. Separate days, visitors and zones with different exposure.
- Select linked categories. Test products and services related to the experience.
- Calculate incremental profit. Deduct promotion, operations, maintenance and cannibalisation.
cdf Sanya demonstrates how far duty free can expand when it presents itself as a destination. The next step is proving that leisure generates profitable and repeatable commercial demand, not attention alone.
Frequently asked questions
Has China Duty Free turned the entire complex into a leisure park?
No. The water park is a seasonal activation of more than 800 square metres within cdf Sanya. It forms part of a wider strategy combining retail, entertainment, services and tourism.
Is the park's sales impact already known?
No specific figures have been published for incremental visits, dwell, conversion or sales attributable to the park. The impact needs to be separated from promotions, peak season and broader Sanya growth.
Which categories could benefit most?
Sun care, hydration, snacks, children's products, summer fashion, sport, beauty, souvenirs and food service may benefit when connected to the experience and measured for incremental contribution.
